HOW CABRITO DE TETE RECEIVED GI RECOGNITION AS A UNIQUE PRODUCT

Cabrito de Tete is a type of goat meat from the Tete province in Mozambique. It is known for its distinct flavor and tender texture, which comes from the specific breed of goat used and the traditional rearing and processing methods employed by local farmers.

To qualify as Cabrito de Tete, the goat meat must come from goats raised in the Tete province and processed using traditional methods. The goats must also be of a specific breed, known as the Galinha de Angola, which is native to the region.

The registration of Cabrito de Tete as a geographical indication provides legal protection for the name and ensures that only goat meat meeting the specific requirements can be marketed under that name. This helps to protect the reputation of the product and the livelihoods of the local farmers who produce it.

The registration of Cabrito de Tete as a GI is an important milestone for Mozambique and the African continent as a whole. It highlights the potential of GI protection as a tool for economic development and the preservation of cultural traditions.

Cabrito de Tete is the First GI registration in ARIPO supported by EUIPO

On the 23rd of  November, 2020, Mozambique officially launched the newly created geographical indication (GI) Cabrito de Tete, which is the first GI registered in ARIPO (African Regional Intellectual Property Organization).

THE PRODUCTION PROCESS OF CABRITO DE TETE

The production process of Cabrito de Tete involves traditional rearing techniques and slaughtering practices, which have been passed down from generation to generation. The goats are raised in a free-range environment, where they feed on a variety of natural vegetation, including wild fruits, grasses, and leaves. The goats are also allowed to roam freely, which contributes to their muscle development and overall health. Once the goats are mature, they are slaughtered using traditional methods that involve minimal stress and pain. The meat is then processed and prepared using traditional recipes and cooking techniques, which have been refined over generations. Cabrito de Tete is typically roasted or grilled and served with a variety of sides, such as rice, beans, and vegetables.

The creation of the Cabrito de Tete GI is expected to provide protection for the traditional knowledge and practices associated with the production of this highly valued meat product. The GI will also promote the development of the local economy by providing a platform for local producers to market and sell their products under the Cabrito de Tete name. Additionally, the GI will enable consumers to identify and purchase authentic Cabrito de Tete products, which are produced using the traditional methods and practices that make this product so unique.

WHY CABRITO DE TETE IS A GI PRODUCT?

Cabrito de Tete has been granted a geographical indication (GI) because it is a product whose quality, reputation, and other characteristics are essentially linked to its geographical origin. The geographical indication highlights the unique qualities and characteristics of the product that are derived from the specific geographical area in which it is produced, processed, or prepared. In the case of Cabrito de Tete, the goats are raised in the Tete region of Mozambique, where they graze on a variety of native vegetation, which gives the meat a distinct flavor and texture. Therefore, the GI provides legal protection to ensure that only products that meet the specific standards and originate from the Tete region can be labeled and marketed as Cabrito de Tete.

THE ECONOMIC RELEVANCE OF CABRITO DE TETE TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN MOZAMBIQUE

The economic relevance of Cabrito de Tete to the local communities in Mozambique is significant. First, the production and sale of Cabrito de Tete provides income and livelihoods for many small-scale farmers and producers in the region. These farmers are able to sell their goats and goat meat at a premium price due to the GI designation, which helps them to earn a higher income and support their families.

Second, the GI designation also helps to promote tourism in the Tete region, as tourists are often interested in trying local and unique foods. This increased tourism can bring additional income to local businesses and communities, which can help to support the local economy.

The GI designation also helps to preserve traditional farming practices and local knowledge related to the production of Cabrito de Tete. This can help to maintain cultural heritage and promote sustainable farming practices, which can benefit both the local community and the environment.

The designation of Cabrito de Tete as a GI product has important economic implications for local communities in Mozambique, as it provides income, promotes tourism, and helps to preserve cultural heritage and traditional farming practices.
