STRENGTHENING FOOD SECURITY IN AFRICA: HAND IN HAND THROUGH GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS (GIs)
Food security remains one of Africa’s most pressing challenges, directly linked to agricultural productivity, market access, and sustainable livelihoods. As Africa is faced with climate change, population growth, and fluctuating trade patterns, innovative tools are needed to safeguard traditional food systems, empower rural producers, and ensure fair participation in global markets.
Join this webinar and be part of the global dialogue to commemorate the world food day brought to you by International Trade and Research Centre, Commonwealth Secretariat and Africa International & Commerce Research which will bring together stakeholders and experts to explore how GIs and potential GIs products can be leveraged as a tool for strengthening food systems, enhancing value addition, and positioning African agriculture as both competitive and sustainable in global trade.

Geographical Indications (GIs) represent a powerful instrument to achieve these goals. GIs are distinctive signs used on products with a specific geographical origin and possessing qualities or reputations essentially linked to that location. African agricultural and food products, such as Ethiopian coffee, Malian cotton, Ghanaian cocoa, or Tanzanian cloves, are deeply rooted in local traditions and biodiversity, making them prime candidates for GI protection.
Strengthening the use of GIs across Africa can enhance food security by:
- Improving producer incomes and empowering rural communities.
- Preserving traditional knowledge and biodiversity.
- Enhancing competitiveness of African products in regional and global markets.
- Building consumer trust in quality and authenticity.
