Africa International Trade & Commerce Research (AITCR) and International Trade & Research Center (ITRC) is pleased to invite you to their monthly stakeholder dialogue series
Theme: WTO 12 Ministerial Conference Agreement outcome on the Fishery Industry: Practical Implication on Intra- African Trade

WTO members successfully concluded the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva from June 12 to 17, securing multilaterally negotiated outcomes on a series of key trade initiatives. High on the priority list at MC12 was a deal to eliminate harmful fishing subsidies, which would represent a major step toward protecting marine life and the security of countless jobs and livelihoods in small-scale fisheries worldwide. Harmful fishing subsidies contribute to overfishing, overcapacity, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. According to the African Development Bank Report on the Future of Marine Fisheries in the African Blue Economy 2022, Africa is endowed with some of the most dynamic and productive fishing grounds in the world, and around seven million tons of fish are caught in Africa annually. However, with Africa’s population growth projections, the fish supply must increase to 13 million tons by 2030 to feed 1.7 billion people and 19 million tons by 2050 to feed 2.5 billion Africans.
This stakeholder dialogue seeks to examine the WTO MC12 outcomes on fishery subsidies, the practical implementation of the agreement in Africa, and its nexus with Intra- African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
