HOW STRATEGIC IS THE NIGERIAN GIG ECONOMY TO TRADE AND THE ECONOMY?

The aim of the dialogue is to promote knowledge exchange and capacity development for the digital economy and trade and investment-related issues by bringing together trade experts, policymakers, and practitioners. One promising aspect of the gig economy for Nigeria’s trade is its potential to diversify and expand exports, thereby supporting Nigeria youths to access international markets without geographical limitations. However, there are challenges and risks to trade, and one major concern is the lack of clear regulatory frameworks for online platforms and gig workers. This can lead to issues like worker misclassification, unfair taxation, and inadequate social protection. Moreover, competition from international freelancers can undercut local talent, affecting domestic income generation and stifling local gig workforce development. Nevertheless, the dialogue seek to lead and drive this conversation that will have a positive impact on Nigeria and Africa.
