DOES THE TRADE MARK ACT COVER GI PROTECTION IN NIGERIA? IS THERE A NEED FOR A SUI GENERIS LAW

DOES THE TRADE MARK ACT COVER GI PROTECTION IN NIGERIA? IS THERE A NEED FOR A SUI GENERIS LAW

Geographical Indications (GIs) is an intellectual property right that Nigeria has yet to fully benefit from, despite the abundance of geographically linked origin products such as Nsukka Yellow Pepper, Ofada rice, Agbo, Ofe Awku, Yauri onions, Ijebu garri, Ogili Okpoi, and more.

The Nigeria Technical Working Group on GIs has been working on the outcome of the last Nigeria GIs conference for the past two years. This year, the TWG on GIs intends to finalize the Draft Bill and Regulation and host a series of webinars based on the conference’s outcomes.

All stakeholders and members of the public are invited to attend the webinar series, which is designed to address each conference outcome from February to June 2024, on every last Thursday of the month. Please register to attend the free webinar on Wed, 28th February 2024, where the researchers, experts, and TWG members will examine whether or not a sui generis GIs system is needed for Nigeria, in view of the provisions of the Trademarks Act on certification marks. Your views and feedback are welcomed.

Please register here to participate in the webinar series

Time: 3:00pm- 4:15pm WAT
