Tapping into the State of Emergency on Food Security to Strengthen Subnational IGR
Although 35.2% of Nigerians are fully engaged in agriculture, over 70% still rely on it at the subsistence level for food and complementary source of income. The sector also contributes 23% of the country’s GDP. As strategic as this sector is, sadly Nigeria generates nearly 38 million tons of food loss and waste annually, which partially explains the alarming poverty and attendant hunger levels.
The new government announced a State of Emergency on Food Security in response. While this is a move in the right direction towards addressing these and related issues, does it have viable transmission links to strengthen subnational IGR prospects?
