CONTEXT
WTO members successfully concluded the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva from 12 to 17 June, securing multilaterally negotiated outcomes on a series of key trade initiatives. Initially scheduled to end on 15 June, the ministerial gathering was extended by two days to allow more time for negotiations and reaching agreements. The conference was co-hosted by Kazakhstan and chaired by Timur Suleimenov, First Deputy Chief of Staff to the Kazakh President. At the 2022 WTO Ministerial Conference, trade deals were made on health, food security, and reform, among other things. The 2022 WTO Ministerial Conference agreed to a package of trade deals addressing topics such as health, food security and reform. Members reaffirmed the foundational principles of the WTO and committed to an open and inclusive process to reform all its functions, from deliberation to negotiation to monitoring High on the priority list at MC12 was a deal to eliminate harmful fishing subsidies, which would represent a major step to protect marine life and the security of countless jobs and livelihoods in small-scale fisheries worldwide. Harmful fishing subsidies are those that contribute to overfishing and overcapacity as well as illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. |
OBJECTIVES OF THE WEBINAR |
a. To increase the awareness and understanding of major agreement outcomes on fishery subsides in the MC12. b. To understand how Africa will gain from the MC12 WTO Fishery Agreement outcome. c. To examine the policies or legal measures that that addresses fisheries management in Africa. d. To understand how Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement complement the MC12 outcome on fishery. e. To assess institutional mechanisms and legal framework that regulate fisheries management in Africa. f. To understand how the MC12 outcome can be implemented in the wake of Africa Continental Free Trade Area |
